The Our Languages project supports community languages teaching, focusing on developing partnerships between supplementary and maintained schools which teach community languages. For full details please visit the Our Languages website.
Funding Opportunities for new clusters
Further clusters of links between mainstream and supplementary schools are being set up. If you are teaching community languages and have a link between a mainstream school and a supplementary school and would like to apply for funding to become a cluster please visit the SSAT website for details of the cluster work and how to apply for funding.

Curriculum Guides for community languages
| This series of Curriculum Guides for community languages provides a flexible framework to support the design and delivery of courses in both mainstream and complementary sectors. It also recognises and values children's achievement. The guides draw on recent policy developments in language teaching, including the Key Stage 2 Framework and the Key Stage 3 Strategy, and are linked to the new Languages Ladder. The guides are available for Arabic, Chinese, Panjabi, Tamil and Urdu. For more information view the CILT publications pages. This bulletin for teachers, managers and governors in schools and colleges where community languages are taught is published twice a year, in April and September and contains a mix of features and news items. Positively Plurilingual
A report published by CILT, the National Centre for Languages highlighting the contribution of community languages to UK education and society. The UK has a major linguistic asset in its multicultural population which, if developed wisely and inclusively alongside English and other languages, has the potential to benefit society as a whole as well as improving the life chances of individual children. Every Language Matters
An Ofsted report on provision and impact of teacher training for community languages teachers. The report evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of initial teacher training in languages other than French, German, Irish, Spanish and Welsh. The report is available to download from the Ofsted website.
Use it or lose it!
| New materials are now available from the Languages Work range aimed at pupils who already speak another language in addition to English. The factsheet entitled Use it or lose it! and a range of Hidden Talent posters are available to download and order for free from the Languages Work website. |
